The edible kind are, generally speaking, one of the favorite dishes of the gourmet, and to such an extent, that in certain countries, their market value is extremely high. The poisinous ones are well-known for their harmful effect to the health, some of which are fatal if eaten; an example of which is the murder of the Roman Emperor, Claudius I, who himself was extremely keen on mushrooms, and, as legend has it, was supposed to have been poisoned after eating mushrooms served by his wife, Agrippina, who wanted to secure the succession of favour of her son, Nero, as Emperor. Many people die each year because of eating poisonous mushrooms; it is therefore strongly recommended to eat only well-known types of ones which are supplied by specialists.
